In the summer of 2014 I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Nicaragua to help build sustainable gardens for local schools. The organization I traveled with is called Global Student Embassy (GSE). The goal of GSE is to take students from California and travel countries in Central America to work with the students to build gardens. The organization does not build the gardens for the students but instead works with them to create a sustainable program. Throughout this trip I was tested daily not only physically but also through language. I was able to learn more in my time in Nicaragua than I was able to teach to the children that we were building the gardens with. The children that we worked with taught me how to enjoy life to the fullest. It was amazing to see people with so little that were able to be so happy. One of my favorite memories from the trip was going to one of the schools down the street from the clinic we worked at, Clinica Verde, and playing soccer with the students. There was one child that met us as soon as we walked into the village who wanted to carry the tools we were holding the entire way. It was so fantastic to be able to actually interact with the locals and fully dive into the culture to get the full experience. This is definitely the type of trip I would considering doing again because of what a wonderful experience I had.
